Cameo Edwards of Crave San Francisco - Gluten Free Bakery

Cameo Edwards of Crave San Francisco – Gluten Free Bakery

In 2002, Cameo Edwards was living in San Francisco when she discovered she was gluten sensitive after two years of stomach pain and misleading diagnoses. Determined to eat the foods she loved, she began baking and selling her gluten-free, dairy-free desserts in 2003. Crave seemed like the perfect name for this bakery since her frustrations came from food Cravings in which she could no longer safely indulge. Cameo ran Crave Bakery for 10 years, making a line of high-end products for grocery stores throughout the Western US. In 2009, she also began making gluten-free, allergy-free wedding and party cakes for the Bay Area. The Crave Gluten-Free Cookbook, with over 60 gluten and dairy free recipes, was published in May 2013.

A New Look at Food Allergy Bullying

Posted on

In a study published in Pediatrics in 2012, researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (New York, NY) surveyed 251 families to determine the prevalence and impact of bullying on children with food allergies, aged 8-17. They reported that more than one third of children and teens were bullied specifically because of their food allergies, usually by their classmates. A year later, the same research team conducted a follow-up study recently published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice to learn whether the bullying continued and whether specific strategies led to a reduction in bullying.

Of the 124 families who participated in the second survey, 29 percent reported that their children were bullied because of their food allergies – a similar rate to what was reported in the first study. Thirty-four percent of these children were bullied “frequently” – more than twice a month…

Greetings Food Allergic Fans!

If you, your family, or someone you know has allergies to nuts, and would like to see the Durham Bulls Play, join our friends, NC FACES on June 1st, this coming Sunday, for Durham Bulls vs. Lehigh Valley at 5:05 pm!

This is the the 12th Annual Nut-Controlled section (peanuts and tree nuts) that NC FACES has organized, with the support of Durham Bulls Baseball! Here is a note from NC FACES Group Coordinators, Laura Anderson and Trish Gavankar, RN, BS and Founder of Disney Chefs Rock Food Allergies:

Durham Bulls Nut Controlled Section:

For those who have purchased tickets, could you please send us an email to let us know you are attending? This week is crunch time for ticket sales and they are going very quickly. The Durham Bulls have been so supportive of our group, now we can say thanks by selling out our booth!
Again this year, the Durham Bulls have graciously worked with us to provide a special section for individuals allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. Peanuts, tree nuts, and all products with peanuts or tree nuts, including chocolate are prohibited in this section. The section will be power-washed, cordoned off, and monitored to allow only NC FACES members and friends wearing a Be a Pal sticker! Friends and family of allergic individuals are welcome! Additionally, we have many FACES with multiple food allergies. ALL food contains an allergen for SOMEONE! Please remain seated while eating and make sure everyone has clean hands! We want ALL of our kids to remain safe and have stress free fun!

Save the Date! NC TGIF on September 27th, 2014

We’re moving everything along and it is going briskly!

The North Carolina Triangle Gluten Intolerance Fair will be held at Ganyard Hill Farm in Durham, NC on September 27th, 2014.

If you know anything about pumpkin farms during the fall, you KNOW we are going to have a wonderful time!

Take a look at the website! Doesn’t it just make you smile?

We will also be hosting guest speakers, demo presenters with samples on our program and vendors who are knowledgeable about gluten-free foods, health, fitness, and beauty.

I am so proud and happy to announce that NC FACES, a volunteer-only support group for parents and families of food allergic children will benefit from a portion of the proceeds. Here is more about them:

We are an all volunteer support group sharing information, support, and some fun.  We provide a social and emotional support network for Food Allergic Families in all stages of learning about the process of living with food allergies. We will remain constant in our dedication to teach our children how to live fully productive, interactive, exciting, and safe lives.

Save the date on your calendar, so when tickets become available, you’ll be ready to be a part of this ground breaking fun!

Let us know if  you’d like to participate! We have several levels of participation available.

We have two major goals:

We want to raise awareness about food allergies, especially gluten and wheat sensitivity, providing resources to educate and inform the public.

We also want to provide a live-action directory of Triangle businesses that are seriously knowledgeable about gluten-free living.

It is so important to maintain an active, safe, and balanced life as a gluten or allergy affected individual! We can do it!

Happy Times!

from Deelish!

NC Triangle Gluten Intolerance Fair

Posted on Updated on

The NC Triangle Gluten Intolerance Fair is off to a great start!

We are gathering resources and contacts who are thoroughly knowledgeable about the unique needs of gluten-free living.

Most of these resources will be located in the Triangle area, so that public attendees will have the ability to understand precisely what the Triangle has to offer gluten-intolerant individuals. All are welcome, as there is much to learn! Let’s bring everyone together!

Now for the fun stuff! We are currently seeking:

Sponsors

With varying levels of sponsorship, and online as well as event exposure.

Platinum

Platinum sponsors receive front page placement on website, dedicated blog post of the business, social media postings, exclusive exposure at Friday night mixer, and key placement at the event.

Gold

Gold sponsors receive front page placement on the nctgif.com website, social media postings, and key placement at the event.

Silver

Silver sponsors receive front page placement on the website, social media postings, and placement at the event.

Customized sponsorship is available to assess your needs and budget.

***Social media will include mention of all sponsors during the event and recap***

Guest Speakers/Presenters

These individuals should have an in-depth knowledge of the subject matter. They would be certified, well-qualified in their field, and have current licensure if applicable.

Vendors

Gluten-free food, health, beauty, and fitness vendors are welcome.

All regulations and requirements must be met, as they are professionally responsible for whatever is offered.

Volunteers

The event will be kept to a manageable size, however it won’t happen without some awesome volunteers who will work short shifts, and receive free admission for the day.

Friday Venue for the NC TGIF Cocktail Hour

Can your establishment mix great gluten-free cocktails and provide a limited menu of certified/naturally gluten-free small plates?

We’d love to work with you! We are hosting a limited ticket cocktail hour on Friday evening  the weekend of the fair!
